Asante Kotoko emerged victorious in the 2025 Toyota Cup, defeating Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

In a physically intense clash, the Porcupine Warriors were dealt an early setback, with key players Kwame Opoku and Emmanuel Antwi forced off with injuries by halftime. Despite the disruption, Kotoko showed resilience and tactical discipline to hold off the South African giants through 90 minutes.

The match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where Guinean goalkeeper Mohammed Camara proved to be the hero of the day. The shot-stopper produced a masterclass performance, saving four of the six penalties taken by Kaizer Chiefs.

Although Lord Amoah, Patrick Asiedu, and captain Samba O’niel missed their attempts, the cool finishes from Henry Ansu, Albert Amoah, and Johnson Owusu were enough to seal a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory.

Head Coach Abdul Karim Zito expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, praising the squad’s composure and fighting spirit.

”I am satisfied with the result even though we met an opponent who is through with their pre-season while we had just started. There are a lot of positives to take from the game and by the time we begin the season, my players will be ready.”

Kotoko now return to Ghana to continue their pre-season preparations ahead of the upcoming domestic campaign, buoyed by a confidence-boosting win on foreign soil.
